The proposed project focuses on two main objectives of relative importance for the study of the rural La Tène habitat in the Carpathian Basin. The first goal is to provide a feasible methodology for establishing the internal organization of settlements and extracting relevant data for setting up the preliminary parameters in terms of chronology, landscape use and economic strategies for these communities. The second task is to reconstruct some of the characteristic of the early and middle La Tène settlements from the southwestern lowlands of Romania. The Late Iron Age habitat in this area is virtually unknown until now despite its importance as a region that facilitates the cultural interaction between Central Europe and the Balkans.
To achieve these goals, four sites have been proposed for investigation. The main site is TimiÈ™oara-Freidorf, which has been surveyed through geophysical measurements and has been excavated in a large proportion. The rest of the sites have only been scantly investigated and will provide an excellent opportunity to test the methodology which was successfully implemented for the first site. Three of the settlements are located in the Banat region, while the fourth was selected from the western Transylvanian region to compare the results. The research methodology involves geophysical scanning of the sites, high resolution digital elevation models, test trenches as well as archaeozoological, archaeobotanical  analyses and radiocarbon dating.
